Robert KatendeStatus: Main Academy Coach

Robert Katende is a man who uses his knowledge and skills to mentor and nurture character in disadvantaged youth and inspire all those he comes in contact with. Coming from a disadvantaged background, God has mightily worked in Katende’s life:

 

EDUCATION:

Robert Katende holds a diploma in Civil Engineering with a Specialization in Water Engineering and a Degree in IT and Computer Engineering.

WORK EXPERIENCE:

With his academic knowledge, he worked with Devine Waters Ministry to drill wells in Gulu, Uganda. Currently he oversees construction for Sports Outreach Institute, Inc. (headquartered in Lynchburg, Virginia, USA) at the Kampala Ministry Center, Kampala, UG (new headquarters for Sports Outreach Ministry, Africa, serving Kampala and Gulu, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya).

He first served as project coordinator, later as a Ministry Coordinator and he currently Sports Outreach Ministry Director, Kampala. He also served as Interim Director for Sports Outreach Programe Kenya for two years until he empowered an indigenous director.

SPORTS:

Robert pursued a Sports Ministry course and volunteered for Sports Outreach for nearly two years before joining full time in 2002. He played soccer for Miracle Football Club and Sports Outreach Ambassadors (SOA) F.C. under Coach Aloysius Kyazze plus many other clubs. He has played soccer on clubs like Miracle F.C, Top TV F.C, SOA F.C and he is currently playing for the Good News F.C (Sports Outreach Ministries, UG

CHESS:

Robert Katende is the Founder and Director of SOM Chess Academy (Home of The QUEEN OF KATWE Project). He is a FIDE Instructor as well as an International Arbiter and is currently General Secretary to FIDE Socail Action Commission as well as Director of Development for the Uganda Chess Federation.

Robert started and developed the Chess programs in the Slums of Kampala and later in the internally displaced people’s camps (IDP) in Gulu. He has diligently used Chess as a vehicle to develop young people from the streets and Slums of Kampala and Gulu into great leaders and persons that are now a delight to Uganda. The Chess Ministry program has impacted the young people in an awesome way that, it has now hit the international level. As a result, a book (The Queen of Katwe) about his life and work by sports writer, Tim Crothers of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. Disney has made a movie based on this book. He continues his work and Ministry with the help of other partners. He is a creative and innovative exemplary leader, with 16 years’ experience in Sports Ministry and leadership. He is a great sports man since his school time as a youth, taking part in several disciplines such as Soccer, volleyball, chess, basketball and field events. He is an academician and a good Mathematics teacher; helping students from the universities and secondary schools on voluntary basis. He uses his knowledge and skills to mentor nurture character in the youths. He is active in several ways, self-motivated to take on responsibilities, empowers and inspires others. Robert Katende is a problem solver and does not fear to take on new challenges. His nickname at the Sports Outreach international headquarters is “The Fixer”! He has accomplished several projects including construction projects. He travels all around the world inspiring people. He is married to Sarah and they have three beautiful daughters Mercy, Hope and Queen Katende; they live happily in Kampala, Uganda with many other children from the chess programs that they mentor.
